There’s more to healing than the physical. In this series I share ten body/mind/spirit practices to help us live in the LymeLight, from stealthy back to healthy. Each will be posted separately during the holiday season.

Movement
& Exercise

Chronic Lyme disease seeped pain, stiffness and fatigue into my life, along with a pipe bomb splatter of challenging health issues, from allergies to muscle spasms to brain fog. If I’d stopped moving, everything would have been worse.

We must move. Certain motions might be too painful, but others that feel reasonable can be substituted to keep us in the stream of good that flows as we move our bodies and minds through this world.

Move your energy and exercise your freedom to choose. Chronic Lyme is a master class for both. With its effects on energy, muscles, joints, nerves, brain and neurological functioning, it’s an easy slide into stagnancy. Some understand-ably become bedridden. And the various ways we pull ourselves in can further contract and stall our energy: steeling against pain, isolating, moving as little as possible. Contraction has a purpose, but it’s not a healthful way to live. To support healing, we have to find ways to move our energy regularly. And, it turns out, we’re called to exercise choice in a big way.

Movement of Energy

Try for at least one of these a day, especially when body movement is limited.

Go outside, if only for a few moments. Walk if you can, or sit and drink it in.

Stand in the wind. If you’re up to this variation, try standing in the rain.

Open the blinds and let the sun shine in.

Fill your space with music you love. Dance, even if you have to stay seated.

Make noise in your space with drums, musical instruments or pots and pans. Whip it up for a few minutes. Notice how different it feels when you’re through. Notice how you feel.

Sing or play an instrument.

Smudge your space with white sage or other herbs. If smoke is troublesome, clear the energy with alcohol and essential oils instead. My go-to is cheap vodka in a spray bottle, along with a few drops of lavender and palo santo or white sage. Citrus also works well. Just DON’T DRINK THE VODKA!

Pray.

Laugh.

Take a salt bath: Himalayan salt, Epsom salts, table salt or baking soda—any of these will clear your energy better than water alone. If you’re not fond of baths, substitute a comfortably warm shower; plain water also clears energy.

Exercise of Choice

Choice is a major theme on this planet of free will. Major religions and spiritual teachings emphasize how individuals must constantly choose, including the teachings of Jesus about choosing to forgive. In this light, it hardly seems likely that an emerging health crisis like Lyme disease and coinfections would have nothing to do with choice. Other major threats to the public health also contain wide veins of choice such as diet and lifestyle for heart disease; environment, diet and lifestyle for cancer and all possible variables of nurture for violence.

Decisionland

Even if we’re among the minority who receive adequate antibiotic treatment within two weeks of a tick bite, there is about a 50% chance that decisions we make from that point on will have a major impact on our future health. Those of us diagnosed with Lyme and coinfections outside the two-week exposure window stand decisively in Decisionland, the reality where all aspects of our lifestyle conspire to create either health or sickness because of their impact on the immune system. Unfortunately, having taken antibiotics is itself a stone in the sickness basket due to negative effects on the digestive system, a key part of immune response.

Our prospects for healing are bright, however. God has provided our medicine in Nature. It grows abundantly and requires no prescription. Herbalists, naturopaths, health-seeking MDs and others have studied it such that we can be confident it is inherently safe. Ethical manufacturers are bringing clean herbal therapy to the marketplace free of toxins and fit for healing. Many herbs heal gently like a grandmother. All of this is ours for the choosing if we have the money to pay, at a cost far below most medical treatments. And by choosing, each of us is empowered to manage our own recovery and health. It’s a grown-up healing paradigm that’s all but lost in the culture of pharmaceutical worship and hoisting doctors and the medical establishment onto ill-fitting pedestals.

Which brings me to my point. Our energies—those of regular people who’ve been infected—can magnetize the path of true healing. Chronic Lymies are perfectly situated to show, through our health or lack thereof, which treatments actually restore wellness. Our choices can become either the spiritual calling of wayshowing or another wrenching story about disease modern medicine isn’t prepared to heal. We can be living proof of the efficacy of Nature’s medicine: herbs combined with diet, detox, stress management, appropriate activity and enough sleep. We can be examples to ourselves and others of how choosing our God-given identity of peaceful, loving children of the Divine lifts us from earthly disasters incubated in human fear.

We might even take our healing into the public sphere when we’re ready, to help others find answers and avoid the misery of Lyme disease past. Things are finally beginning to change.

Or we can avoid choosing and spiral into a haze of sickness, drug-care, anger, despair and victimhood as we realize conventional diagnostics work against us, expensive new diagnostics aren’t covered, the treatment insurance won’t pay for (even from most “Lyme-literate” physicians) isn’t healing us, the CDC is part of the problem, we can’t get disability and life is already halfway down the tubes, all likely traceable to hare-brained bioweapons experiments and releases our government tried to hide. Furthermore, the agents that really do help like herbs and diet, are not suggested and met with skepticism by our health plan doctors because they have no knowledge of them.

Energy Medicine

Let one hand cradle your forehead and the other cradle your occiput (the back of the head just above the neck). Close your eyes and take a few deep, easy breaths. Continue until you feel better. Now, with gratitude to Donna Eden and her energy medicine, let’s spend no more precious life in that maelstrom.

Exercise Medicine

We should also literally move the body through whatever exercise we can manage. Humans are built to move, and what we don’t use we eventually lose. What’s worse than the particular manifestations of your disease? Being weaker on top of it.

Apply allowing to your exercise. Rather than push, allow the body to move through space in ways that feel comfortable and beneficial. Become the water flowing downstream, carried by gravity. Like water, climb only as high as your total energy will lift you. Allow rocks. Yield, yet make your impression. Water cooperates with what is.

If the best you can do is lie flat on your back, move your mind toward the positive. If all you can muster is a thought, then a thought will suffice. Here’s a good one:

This too shall pass.

And another:

I’ll let myself nap.

We can rest while maintaining movement.

Choose Once Again

The most important choice is to recognize God’s powerful gift of healing. Life is rigged for us. In fact, healing is all around, within our reach. Let us bring our needs to It.

Temptation has ONE lesson it would teach, in ALL its forms, WHEREVER it occurs. It would persuade the holy Son of God he is a body, born in what must die, unable to escape its frailty, and bound by what it orders him to feel. It sets the limits on what he can do; its power is the only strength he has; his grasp cannot exceed its tiny reach. Would you BE this, if Christ appeared to you in all His glory, asking you but this:

“Choose once again if you would take your place among the saviors of the world,
or would remain in hell, and hold your brothers there.”

For He HAS come, and He IS asking this.

How do you make the choice? How easily is this explained! You ALWAYS choose between YOUR weakness and the strength of Christ in you. And what you choose is what you think is real. Simply by never using weakness to direct your actions, you have given it no power. And the Light of Christ in you is given charge of everything you do. For you have brought your weakness unto Him, and He has given you His strength instead. Trials are but lessons which you failed to learn presented once again, so where you made a faulty choice before you now can make a better one, and thus escape all pain which what you chose before has brought to you.

In other words, I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me. That is badass.
