Having Caught a Glimpse
Grace Notes: of Music and Spirit
Having Caught a Glimpse
I am always noticing the voice of the Holy Spirit in music—current and old, sacred and secular, intentional and unintentional. This is part of the still, small voice that speaks to all of us, through all things, that we may have the opportunity to wake up, listen and heal. (Sometimes the voice is cloaked in codependent romanticism, but that’s another article.) The voice seems particularly audible in music because music speaks to us outside of the rational mind. Music has the vibrational capacity to penetrate to levels of consciousness we ordinarily tend to pave over, avoid or dismiss. Music goes straight to the heart, and so has a profound role in our collective awakening. The free access to so much music of so many varieties serves the current (unprecedented) speed and breadth of our consciousness-raising.
This New Year’s Day I want to share a triple-Holy-Spirit-Zen-alarm-clock performance from Glass Hammer, the other band Jon Davison (lead singer with progressive rock icons Yes since 2012) works with. Enjoy! And I take a look at how the spiritual message of the lyrics resonates with the teachings of A Course in Miracles below.
- “Beati quorum via” – the second of Three Motets by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
Beati quorum via integra est,
Qui ambulant in lege Domini.
Blessed are those who go the way of integrity,
Who walk in the law of God.
- “Having Caught a Glimpse” – from The Inconsolable Secret by Glass Hammer
- “South Side of the Sky” by Yes (Jon Anderson, Chris Squire)
the sunshine in mountains sometimes lost [our dream of separation from God]
the river can disregard the cost [matters not to the truth of eternity]
and melt in the sky warmth when you die
were we ever warmer on that day a million
miles away [separation is not and was not real, so there were no real effects]
we seemed from all eternity
Having Caught A Glimpse by Glass Hammer
Having caught a glimpse of his perfect face
In the mirror [God’s perfect Son, His Creation—the Christ—is within us]
Seeing but a poor reflection [the Christ is hidden under layers of ego thought]
Longing fills my heart [our endless searching on earth is really to find the Christ within]
And then I hear the echo of
Singing that no earthly voice could make [when we understand that we begin to hear]
If you will listen you will hear
The sound of singing as the morning dawns
The sun will rise, then you will go
You are a prisoner no more [joy and freedom are the gifts of awakening]
Now I know I must surrender everything
All to him [we must give ourselves over to the Creator’s Purpose]
Knowing I must die to live anew [and let go of the ego’s agenda]
If you will listen you will hear
The sound of singing as the morning dawns
The sun will rise, then you will go
You are a prisoner no more
Lay down your sorrow and behold him [surrender releases pain and illusion, allowing us to see clearly]
Rise up like children we will follow him [we let go and allow ourselves to be directed by the Holy Spirit instead of the ego]
For we return unto our Father [surrender lets us see we are already home, safe and unchanged]
Our King, behold him now our Father [we are forever the created, one with The Creator]
Watching our lives rush by
In the mirror’s poor reflection
We never really see the true life [the ego’s world is a distraction to prevent our homecoming]
Waiting just beyond [home/heaven is a place we’ve never left, just outside of ego perceptions]
It’s such a weary world [the ego’s world is a nightmare based on the idea of hell]
That groans beneath the curse [hell is a place where God is not]
If only we could go home [we long for heaven]
Rise up, rise up and go [see the truth]
Your curse is broken now [“hell” – the place where God is not—is just an impossible idea]
Rise up, come forth [see the truth and take your place in heaven]
She sees him standing there [when we listen and surrender we see the love of God everywhere]
Her King and father
Eyes bright and shining, and full of love
Standing by to claim her for his bride, her prince has come [in seeing we become “the bride of Christ,” marrying/reconnecting with the submerged truth of ourselves]
Now her sorrow is turned to
Joy. . . [which restores our inheritance of joy and freedom]
Resonant themes from A Course in Miracles:
What is the Christ?
Christ is God’s Son as He created Him.
He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well.
He is the Thought which still abides within the Mind that is His Source.
He has not left His holy home, nor lost the innocence in which He was created.
He abides unchanged forever in the Mind of God.
(ACIM Workbook Part II, Introduction to Exercises 271 – 280, “What is the Christ?“)
The Holy Spirit understands the means you made,
by which you would attain what is forever unattainable.
And if you offer them to Him, He will employ the means you made for exile
to restore your mind to where it truly is at home.
(ACIM Workbook Part II, Section 7, “What is the Holy Spirit?“)
Heaven is here. There is nowhere else. Heaven is now. There is no other time. . . .
All beliefs will point to this if properly interpreted.
(ACIM, Manual for Teachers #24 “Is Reincarnation True?“)
Heaven itself is reached with empty hands and open minds.
(ACIM Workbook Lesson 133)
The song of our rejoicing is the call to all the world
that freedom is returned,
that time is almost over,
and God’s Son has but an instant more to wait until his Father is remembered,
dreams are done,
eternity has shined away the world,
and only Heaven now exists at all.
(ACIM Workbook Lesson 230)
This is the week-end in which a new year will be born from the time of Christ. I have perfect faith in you, to do all that you would accomplish. Nothing will be lacking, and you will MAKE COMPLETE, and NOT destroy. Say and UNDERSTAND this: [when tempted to judge others]
I give you to the Holy Spirit, as part of myself.
I know that you will be released,UNLESS I WANT TO USE YOU TO IMPRISON MYSELF.
In the name of MY freedom, I WILL your release,
Because I recognize that we will be released TOGETHER.
So will the year begin in joy and freedom. There is much to do, and we have been long delayed. Accept the holy instant as this year is born, and take your place, so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening. Make this year different, by making it ALL THE SAME. And let ALL your relationships be made holy FOR you. This is OUR will.
Amen.

I guess we were only meant to catch a glimpse of “Having Caught a Glimpse” because the performance I shared from YouTube is no longer “sharable.” For that I apologize. ❤ ❤ ❤
