The Metaphor and Blessing of Christmas

[When Joseph and Mary] came to Bethlehem the day was done.  But Bethlehem was thronged with people going to Jerusalem; the inns and  homes were filled with guests, and Joseph and his wife could find no place to rest but in a cave where animals were kept; and there they slept.  At midnight came a cry, A child is born in yonder cave among the beasts.  And lo, the promised son of man was born.

(The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ, Section II, Chapter 3, 3-4)

In humble emptiness the Christ is born.  So blessed are our disappointments and failures, for in them too is the key to fulfillment.  From the experience of nothing comes everything.  In a mind filled with the illusions of the world there is no room for Christ Consciousness.  We need to experience “no room at the inn,” although it need not be unpleasant.

I prepare the way by practicing non-attachment and forgiveness and cultivating a quiet mind.  God’s grace, peace and joy are given me, and as I claim them, I make a joyful noise unto the Lord.  In the cave of my self among the beasts of my ego, the Christ is born!

The sign

of Christmas is a star,

a light in darkness.

See it not OUTSIDE of yourself,

but shining in the Heaven within,

and accept it as the sign the time of Christ has come.

He comes demanding NOTHING.

No sacrifice of ANY kind, of ANYONE, is asked by Him.

In His Presence, THE WHOLE IDEA of sacrifice loses ALL meaning.

For He is Host to God. And you need but invite Him in

Who is there ALREADY, by recognizing that His Host is One.

And no thought ALIEN to His Oneness can abide with Him there.

Love MUST be total to give Him welcome,

for the Presence of holiness CREATES the holiness which surrounds It.

No fear can touch the Host Who cradles God in the time of Christ.

For the Host is as holy as the Perfect Innocence that He protects,

and Whose Power protects HIM.

This Christmas, give the Holy Spirit EVERYTHING that would hurt you.

LET yourself be healed completely, that you may JOIN with Him in healing.

And let us celebrate

our release together,

by releasing everyone

WITH us.

The core message of the story of Jesus’ birth is that the emergence of our magnificence from denial and its close companion, ignorance, is inevitable.  The more we focus on the concrete, material details of the Christmas story, the more we risk missing the point.  Even as I believe in the symbols formalized in the Bible stories, I also understand that my belief in any particular symbol is not necessary.  To support my rebirth and healing I simply need to get the underlying message.

Within the story of a virgin’s arduous journey with the man who opened his heart to her, the story of shepherds, stables, angels, wise men and kings, is a meaning conveyed in the stories of many peoples: that it was dark and a light in the Heavens guided us to a teacher descended from absolute purity who showed us how to find the Light within again.  The savior gestates within.  Mana—all power comes from within.  Listen to the still small voice within.  The Christmas story of rebirth, recovery and redemption plays out in our human lives again and again as we heal, revealing the undefilable truth of our God-given nature of Love.  From our darkest hours we bounce back in a brilliance brighter than would seem possible!  This rebirth is the gift in loss, if we will stretch out our arms and accept it.

Here is what I would call a Hawaiian “Christmas” story [with my editorial comments]:

In Hawaiian mythology, La’ieikawai (Lā’ie-i-ka-wai) and her twin sister La’ielohelohe [duality] were born in Lā’ie, O’ahu.  They were separated and hidden away from their chiefly father [the ego] who had all his daughters killed at birth, because he wanted a first born son [attachment and rejection of the feminine, receptive nature].  La’ieikawai was hidden in a cave [the dormant Christ Self, which is wholeness encompassing the Divine Masculine AND Feminine] which was only accessed by diving in a pool of water [healing deep core wounds] named Waiapuka.  Soon it was well known that someone of royalty resided nearby because of the tell-tale rainbow that graced the sky above her cave dwelling [our true Identity cannot be completely hidden and is not besmirched by the illusion].  Her grandmother, Waka, secretly tried to smuggle her to Paliuli, Puna, Hawaii island.  On the way there others heard of her beauty and the rumors travelled all throughout the islands [our Christ Self cannot be suppressed by the ego].  Aiwohikupua, a chief from the island of Kaua’i decided he would pursue her.  [Christ Consciousness is attractive after all.]  At her home in Paliuli, Laieikawai was attended by supernatural birds such as the ‘i’iwi polena [angels, guides and Ascended Masters].  It is said she could float on the wings of the birds [knew her true Identity as a Child of God, which allowed miracles to flow through her].  While other royalty in Hawai’i had mere feather capes and cloaks, Paliuli had a house made of the sacred feathers [she lived in Christ Consciousness, instead of just visiting once in awhile].  After a series of misfortunes, [our collective belief in the mad idea of separation] she becomes known as Kawahineliula (woman of the twilight) [our belief in and struggle with the ego continues].

The Birth of the Christ Reunites Heaven and Earth

“Heaven and Earth shall pass away”

means that they will not always exist as separate states.

My Word, which is the Resurrection and the Light,

shall not pass away, because Life is Eternal.

YOU are the work of God,

and His Work is wholly loveable

and wholly loving.

This is how a man MUST think of himself in his heart,

because this is what he IS.

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

(A Course in Miracles Urtext T 1 B 24c-d)

Christ Consciousness takes away the error of the world and reveals everlasting peace.  May you recognize in yourself the peace and purity of the Christ.  May the Christ Light shine brightly within us now and evermore.

Merry Christmas!

  1. Dear Carol,

Lovely — exquisitely beautiful interpretations of the symbols of Christmas, the remembering of Christ Truth. I especially appreciate your spiritual interpretation of the Christmas story — what a lovely Christmas gift to your readers . May there be no room in the inn of my mind for judgments, needs, and expectations — and room only for Christ’s Love and Peace.

With much love and gratitude for your gift, Lynne
